Baking Soda Volcano

Watch a tabletop volcano erupt right before your eyes — no real lava required!

Video coming soon!

This experiment hasn't been filmed yet — check back after the next SASSY Science classroom visit.

What you need

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • A small plastic bottle
  • A tray to catch the mess
  • Dish soap (optional, for extra foam)

Why it works

Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When they mix, they react and release carbon dioxide gas — that's the bubbly fizz you see erupting out like lava! Dish soap traps that gas inside bubbles, which is what makes the eruption extra foamy.
