Dancing Raisins

Drop raisins into fizzy soda and watch them dance up and down like they're alive!

Video coming soon!

This experiment hasn't been filmed yet — check back after the next SASSY Science classroom visit.

What you need

  • A clear glass
  • Clear soda or sparkling water
  • A handful of raisins

Why it works

Sparkling water is full of tiny carbon dioxide bubbles. The wrinkly surface of a raisin is perfect for those bubbles to grab onto and cling together. Enough bubbles make the raisin float all the way up — then at the top, the bubbles pop and the raisin sinks back down, over and over, so it looks like it's dancing.
